Did you know that beauty ingredient regulations aren’t…really….regulations at all? Yep…

I remember a post I did on Facebook my first year as a health coach and beauty ingredient consultant – I really did it to get people’s attention – “When you’re ready to stop smearing dead animals on your face, give me a call!”

Needless to say, that post doesn’t get many comments, even to this day. But in all honesty – do you REALLY know what’s in your cosmetics? I will not sit here and pretend that what’s in your pharmacy store bought makeup is actually good for you. Let alone the high end beauty product counters at department stores – Estee Lauder? Clinique? Mac? No thank you! My job is to educate others, engage with you, and shed some light on hard to find facts (which are now becoming more common, thankfully).

Beauty ingredient regulations made the news…

Recently, our local news did an article on how sunscreen toxins are absorbed for up to a day after application. Which several friends sent to me saying – “Isn’t this what you teach?”. It absolutely is. Anything applied to your skin will absorb into your bloodstream within 26 seconds. So what’s REALLY in your products? Have you done the research? And not just the products… research the parent companies as well. Aveda used to be a favorite of mine – until Estee Lauder bought them back in 1997. Formulations changed, and so did ingredients. It’s not the clean product it used to be.

You can agree to disagree with me, but do your own research when it comes to this matter. I’ve noticed the majority of people – don’t want to know what is in their products. Ignorance is bliss… right? I won’t go into all the detail here about what’s REALLY in your products, because honestly, I don’t mean to scare you away. But I do get into it in my Ditch the Toxins Course, so if you’re interested in finding out more about it, click here

I used to feel that way – until I started working in animal care. Then my eyes were open. Animal testing, animal byproducts, and a slew of other chemicals and fillers in my every day products… my life went into an instant change from that point forward. Around the same time, I found out I had an autoimmune disorder – and finding out about all the harmful toxins and chemicals in my products were a game changer for me. I had to clean up my act and fast if I was going to start feeling better.

The FDA and Beauty Ingredient Regulations

Did you know the FDA recently banned the 12th toxic substance from consumer personal care products? The vote was back in 2016, and by September 2017, all consumer products made with Triclosan were illegal to sell in commercial settings. But what I find so odd about this “ban” – it’s only applicable in consumer products that you can personally buy. Industrial uses, such as hospitals, doctors offices, etc are still permitted to use it! There are many other uses for Triclosan, so I’ll let you read about them here…

When was the last time something was banned before Triclosan? 1938. Guys, that’s 79 years. 79 years that America has been permitting this harmful product in our everyday personal care products. There are over 80,000 known chemicals registered in the United States. And the FDA is only telling us that 12 are bad for us (or at least, have been tested to be bad).

European Union

The European Union, however, bans just over 1300 chemicals. I don’t know about you, but 1300 sounds a lot better than 12. Can you find European Union personal care products in the States? Why, yes, you can! Just do your research. And realize that you will not likely find them on store shelves – you may have to buy them from consultants, or go to specialty stores to find the good stuff! But they are out there – with a little bit of research, and some time browsing the internet, you’ll be finding products in now time. Don’t have time to do all the research? I’m here to help. I work with a few companies that sell high quality, non toxic personal care and cleaning products. Just ask me!

My best advice for you?

Please do your own independent research. No, reading a blog is not research (just like this can’t be used as research for a paper, right?!). Always look for third party validation and clinical studies. Realize that most companies will only run clinical studies on a handful of products as it is an expensive task. I’m grateful I work with a company that has clinically tested EVERY SINGLE PRODUCT they sell. Talk about transparency!

Here is what I stick with (this is just me – make your own decisions and do your own research!)

  • Vegan Certified
  • Cruelty Free Certified
  • Certified Gluten Free (yes, even Celiac’s love our skincare because it’s gluten free!)
  • BSCG Certified (this is mainly for athletes – drug testing approved!)
  • Non-GMO verified

And that’s just legal certifications. There are so many more banned substances and ingredients out there – if you look for them!

Another thing to think about – The FDA is NOT REQUIRED to list every single ingredient on personal care products. How scary is that? They just have to put the big name stuff, but they can leave out trace elements of ingredients, or ingredients they don’t want to list that are found in minimal traces in a product.

Do your due diligence

Make sure that whatever you go with, they have a FULL list of ingredients and are transparent about it. You should be able to research and see ALL theĀ  ingredients in a product. We do it for food, right? But the FDA has adopted a more “innocent until proven guilty” front on the personal care products side. Which is why I follow European Union Standards, as they are more “guilty until proven innocent” when it comes to harmful chemicals.
